A System Wide Approach to Crisis Response
featured project
For several years, I was deeply involved in youth suicide prevention, helping young people build awareness and skills to support themselves and their friends during times of crisis. I often heard that youth didn’t feel comfortable reaching out to many of the existing institutional supports. Past experiences had left them feeling that the mental health and education systems weren’t consistent or reliable in their response.
This insight inspired me to work with several school districts and community agencies to build capacity among the adults who interact with youth every day—teachers, counselors, and community workers—ensuring they were ready, willing, and able to respond when needed. A key part of this work was creating a consistent approach with Living Works safeTALK and ASIST, so that youth received the same thoughtful, compassionate care no matter where they entered the system.
The results were remarkable. Professionals reported feeling more equipped, confident, and connected. They valued being part of a network of safety, just as the youth did. They left with practical tools, strategies, and relationships that strengthened safety across schools and communities, ensuring that both youth and staff felt supported, prepared, and empowered.
“Lu was instrumental in modernizing our district’s suicide intervention protocols and training, aligning them with best practices and leading ASIST training for all counsellors and youth workers.”
Her collaborative, compassionate approach ensured our procedures truly met student needs, and her support in securing grant funding made the project possible. I highly recommend Lu to any organization looking to strengthen mental health supports—her expertise and dedication made a lasting difference.
